Radiation fibrosis is often described simply as a burn or a diffuse scar. This lecture takes a step back and examines why that description is not enough.
The discussion follows the evolving understanding of its pathogenesis—from the early inflammatory phase and TGF-β signaling to fibroblast activation, excessive extracellular matrix deposition, secondary hypoxia, and impaired matrix turnover. An especially interesting part is the connection between radiation fibrosis and the mechanisms involved in chronic wounds and collagen-based wound dressings.
The second part focuses on radiotherapy fractionation and the biological effective dose, using breast cancer treatment as the main clinical context. The lecture also touches on long-term functional and aesthetic consequences and the challenges radiation-damaged tissue creates for future reconstruction.
