Henry Marsh’s Open Lectures on Medical Mistakes and Surgical Responsibility

“Every doctor eventually comes to understand that we are not all-powerful. Our strength lies not in the illusion of perfection, but in the courage to acknowledge our vulnerability alongside the patient.”

These words became the central theme of the open lectures delivered by the renowned neurosurgeon Henry Marsh, dedicated to the difficult and clinically significant subject of medical mistakes. The meetings offered a frank and thoughtful discussion on how painful professional experience can be transformed into insight, maturity, and greater responsibility in clinical practice.

On 7 March, the lecture was held at Kyiv City Clinical Hospital No. 18 for more than 100 physicians and interns. On 8 March, Henry Marsh addressed more than 200 students in the assembly hall of the Bogomolets National Medical University.

Both events took place with the support of the Ukrainian College of Surgeons. During the visit, representatives of the College held discussions with Mr. Marsh regarding future collaboration and received valuable professional guidance.

The lectures emphasized a fundamental principle of surgical practice: at the center of every operation is a human life, and at the center of every clinical decision lies the surgeon’s ethical judgment and professional integrity.

The Ukrainian College of Surgeons expresses its sincere gratitude to Henry Marsh for his openness, intellectual honesty, and commitment to advancing surgical education and patient safety.
